El Capitan

Romaldo Fontecchio emigrated from Capistrano, Italy in 1898 at age 18 to work the mines in Wakefield, Michigan. His bride Laura joined him in 1936 at age 20. They lived in Hurley, Wisconsin, a town which was infamous for bootlegging and “girls”. Romaldo purchased 40 acres on the Spread Eagle curve in 1926. Spread Eagle was then known as “Little Hurley”.
Together they operated The Pine Tree from the 30’s until 1959 when El Capitan was established. Many friends and family have worked here over the years and the restaurant is in its 3rd generation of family ownership to this date.
When El Capitan was started Robert and Laura had the idea of serving quality Italian food in an enjoyable atmosphere. The same holds true today as all of our pasta, sauces, bread, meatballs and sausage are prepared by hand in our kitchen and our steaks are USDA steer. Since all of our Italian dinner are cooked to order it may take a little longer for your dinner to be completed. This assures that you are getting the freshest possible food anywhere.
